Biography and CV

Born in 1945 in Northampton, and educated at Northampton Grammar School and Kesteven College of Education. From 1969 to 1971 was teaching at a comprehensive school.

1971 Joint Exhibition at The Guildford Gallery

1972 - 1976 Assistant Project Director Surrey County Council Experimental Education Centre in interdisciplinary education

1976 - 1985 Private Gallery - Chawton, Hampshire selling slipware and domestic stoneware

1982 Ceramic Demonstration for BBC Blue Peter

1985 - 1993 Private Company designing and marketing commercial ceramics

1989 Assisted first firing of Patrick Sargent's wood kiln in Switzerland

1990 Built unique double cross-draft wood kiln and experimented with firings and new ways of working with new partner

1993 Sold successful business giving freedom to make expressive work. There followed three years of experiments with kilns, glazes and forms

1997 When his partner had a cancer scare he realised that it no longer seemed to matter how much clay was used and if there were failures. The feeling of freedom resulted in his new work - large asymmetric bowls with free slip painting, and he felt that he had finally found his voice.

1998 Elected member of Newlyn Society of Artists (NSA). Later elected onto committee and served as Hon. Treasurer

1998 Moved to West Penwith

2002 Appledore Visual Arts Festival - invited solo artist
2002 St Ives International 'Ceramica' - showcase Entrance Installation in Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro

2004 'Elemental Insight' - competitive touring exhibition sponsored by Met Office to celebrate relocation, curated by Devon Guild of Craftsmen.

2005 Won Emilia-Romagna Prize at Premio Faenza International Ceramic Art Competition - works shown at International Museum of Ceramic Art in Faenza - June - Dec 2005

2005,6 NSA Critic's Choice Exhibitions at Lemon Street Gallery, Truro; Thompson's the City, London; Goldfish Contemporary Fine Art, Penzance and Campden Gallery

2006 'Spontaneous Combustion', Trelowarren

2007 International Museum of Ceramic Art, Faenza, Italy - An installation of 9 6ft pieces 'In the Stillness is the Dance' in the exhibition of three masters - 'I Maestri del Concorso' with Pompeo Pianezzola of Italy and Gofredo Gaeta of Faenza - which ran concurrently with the 55th International Competition for artists under 40 years. 2007 Awarded Arts Council grant of £4,080- Enabling Transportation and Presentation of Ceramic Sculpture

2008 'Dancing the Clay' - ten year solo retrospective exhibition at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery (see photos on 'Images from Exhibitions' page)

2012 New Art Centre, Roche Court - Three large pieces

2012 Tremenheere Sculpture Garden - Two pieces on permanent show in Lime Tree Cafe and three pieces in the garden.

2013 Tremenheere Sculpture Garden - a single piece added to be permanently in the woodland part of the garden.

2013 Won Emilia-Romagna Prize at Premio Faenza International Ceramic Art Competition - works shown at International Museum of Ceramic Art in Faenza - May - Oct 2013

2014 Withiel Sculpture Park Summer show

2014/15 Making smaller pieces, followed by a return to making even taller pieces
